Shushilan

Organic fertilizer is produced from cow dung and poultry excreta used in demonstration farm. This initiative has been taken to popularize organic farming in this region. As it is beneficial for health the western countries are interested in organic farming and are allowing and encouraging other countries to export only organic products. Shushilan motivates the farmers and involve them in organic farming. Around 10.5 metric tons organic fertilizer is produced every year which is used to local plantation, eco-demo farm, nursery and field of seed production

Quality seed is the prerequisite for bumper production of rice. Shushilan, has implemented the PETRRA project in support of BRRI to produce quality rice seeds in 2001. It is also very difficult for the farmers to assess the quality of seeds. Falling within this process, the farmers are getting loser with lower production and income inspite of paying hard laborer. In this situation, quality seed production and preservation was started to ensure supply of quality seeds to the farmers in the session. Initiative was taken to produce foundation seed through breeder seed collected from BRRI. The foundation seeds are used to produce truthful level seed by some selected farmers for supplying to the mass farmers. Around 3.5 ton seeds were supplied among farmers in last year. Shushilan has got a dealership certificate from the government.

Clear knowledge of quality of soil is the primary requirement for farmers in agricultural production. Traditionally, farmers do not have any idea about quality of soil and water as a result the production was not as much as predicted by the farmers. Soil and water test centre has been established in the agriculture service centre. Farmers are provided with necessary advices as well as soil and water testing services. Till reporting 359 farmers have been provided with soil and water testing services and advices from this laboratory.

Shushilan’s Resource Centre has been developed in the Agriculture Resource Center with collection of books published by different research institutes as well as books suitable for farmers and audio-video documentary films. The farmers are provided with technological and farm management advisory services from here. Farmers visit the demonstrations of the resource centre, read books and observe the documentary films to enrich their knowledge on agriculture farming system. They can apply the knowledge in their own agriculture based professions. There are 1,900 books and 31 documentary films in the resource center. Around 1,500 farmers used the resource center in 2005.
